Art Rock, Avant-Garde, Experimental | ReR Megacorp #BCD9

After 4 years of work on their 11th release for ReR, this extraordinary, reclusive, and highly individual audio-visual collective continues to evolve through the painstaking accumulation and disposition of a seemingly incompatible range of both exotic and familiar musical languages, instruments, techniques and studio manipulations into one of the few genuinely original bands at work today. It took a long time to refine their unique process of composition to this level of ambiguity and depth and newcomers will wonder how they strayed so far from orthodoxy and yet managed to retain a lucidity and transparency that is quite rare in contemporary music.

The World Heritage is a Japanese supergroup gathered and guided by master drummer Yoshida Tatsuya. The group is Kido Natsuki (Bondage Fruit) and Yamamoto Seiichi (Boredoms) on guitar, Nasuno Mitsuri (Altered States) on bass, Katsui Yuji (Bondage Fruit, etc) on violin, and Yoshida Tatsuya (Ruins, Koenjihyakkei, Korekyojinn, etc) on drums. Tatsuya, Mitsuri and Natsuki had previously played together as Korekyojinn, the mammoth power trio. This group performs mostly high-energy improvised rock with some jazzy tinges, as well as some pieces composed by Tatsuya. All of the music is very energetic and often chaotic. Almost all of the band's material has been recorded live, with only a small handful of tracks being recorded in studio. The band would appeal to fans of other Tatsuya bands, in particular fans of Korekyojinn, Daimonji or Ruins.

Repeating the formula of Low's half-vocal/half-instrumental structure, Heroes develops and strengthens the sonic innovations David Bowie and Brian Eno explored on their first collaboration. The vocal songs are fuller, boasting harder rhythms and deeper layers of sound. Much of the harder-edged sound of Heroes is due to Robert Fripp's guitar, which provides a muscular foundation for the electronics, especially on the relatively conventional rock songs. Similarly, the instrumentals on Heroes are more detailed, this time showing a more explicit debt to German synth pop and European experimental rock. Essentially, the difference between Low and Heroes lies in the details, but the record is equally challenging and groundbreaking.

The basic core of tracks making up Brian Eno's Music for Films was originally assembled in 1976 for inclusion in a promotional LP of prospective cues sent to film directors. In early 1978, a bit before Music for Airports, Editions EG released Music for Films with little more than Eno's cryptic comment: "some of it was made specifically for soundtrack material, (and) some of it was made for other reasons but found its way into films." As with most things Eno, this led to a good deal of speculation and controversy. One filmmaker long ago stated, "All of that is crap – this music was never used in any films," and another film student who had tried out some of the cues: "this is the worst music for films ever.

Experimental Rock / Avant-Garde / Art Rock / Ambient

A universally acknowledged masterpiece, Another Green World represents a departure from song structure and toward a more ethereal, minimalistic approach to sound. Despite the stripped-down arrangements, the album's sumptuous tone quality reflects Eno's growing virtuosity at handling the recording studio as an instrument in itself (à la Brian Wilson). There are a few pop songs scattered here and there ("St. Elmo's Fire," "I'll Come Running," "Golden Hours"), but most of the album consists of deliberately paced instrumentals that, while often closer to ambient music than pop, are both melodic and rhythmic; many, like "Sky Saw," "In Dark Trees," and "Little Fishes," are highly imagistic, like paintings done in sound that actually resemble their titles.

This is awesome score of Sakamoto's for "Taboo" (Gohatto), from master filmmaker Nagisa Oshima with this revisionist Samurai epic…film is set in 1865 during critical times in Japanese history, a struggle between tradition and internationally minded government. With breath-taking cinematography by Toyomichi Kurita, takes on epic proportions with an outstanding cast of actors…this film was screened in competition at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. Our composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto who gave us - "The Last Emperor" (1987) (Academy Award Winner)…"The Sheltering Sky" (1990)…"High Heels" (1991)…"Tokyo Decadence" (1991)…"Little Buddha" (1993) and "Wild Palms" (1993)…is up for another challenge with this captivating score. For "Taboo", Sakamoto uses every electronic sound from elaborate to technical for dramatic and mood swings for his cues…lightness in tone, softer, with mid-range support of counterpoints, rising and falling synthesized tones.

Good Times - under that name this compilation of early Hendrix's was released on CD in 1993 and later was reissued in Europe on various labels under different names (eg Early Years). The album contains many rare tracks. To obtain the highest possible quality, some tracs have been re-recorded by the original artists or several members of the original group.
