Genevieve Fulks - Michael Murray: Passages (2022)
FLAC (tracks), Lossless | 53:16 | 211 Mb
Genre: Classical / Label: Navona

Composer Michael Murray’s album PASSAGES brings the words of iconic 19th and 20th century poets to life through stirring music for solo soprano and instruments. Murray has selected poetry from the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson, William Butler Yeats, William Wordsworth, John Keats, and Walt Whitman, with poems detailing childhood adventure, hope, and tragedy. Celebrated soprano Genevieve Fulks performs throughout; most of the music heard on the album was written specifically with her voice in mind. Murray’s music has been lauded for its meticulously crafted yet ultimately approachable style. Through familiar themes and time-honored poetry, Murray invites listeners to engage with, and even be challenged by, this collection of thoughtful compositions.

This new recording is like an insert between the books of madrigals that mark the course of Rinaldo Alessandrini’s discography, in his long-term progress towards a complete recorded edition. Daylight is a continuation of Night, which appeared on the occasion of the 350th Anniversary of the composer’s birth. Not only do we have the same thematic, non- chronological concept - a sort of ‘Best Of’ Monteverdi’s nine books of madrigals and opera arias, augmented by instrumental pieces by Falconieri and Marini - but it also has its own discrete dramaturgy, from dawn to the full sunlight of day, a scenario conceived by the Italian conductor and harpsichordist.

This is an album of Commodore-64 remixes Marcel Donne, all done in the style/sound of classic Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis albums. To put it simple, Marcel Donné has taken the melodies from famous C64 music, and mixed it with the sound of old-school Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis. A great album for nostalgics of all ages, and especially those who enjoyed Jarre's and Vangelis' classic early albums.

Recorded in Munich, Germany, in 1965, the three tracks that make up The Trance come from the same session that produced the invigorating Booker Ervin/Dexter Gordon tenor battles, Settin' the Pace. These remaining tracks feature Ervin's sole tenor on two of his compositions, the blues "Groovin at the Jamboree" and the haunting 19-minute title track, dedicated to the late bassist George Tucker. Also included is the standard "Speak Low," also clocking in at 19 minutes. Admittedly, tracks that long can get tiresome quickly in the wrong hands. Fortunately, Ervin's inspired exploratory tenor flights are consistently stirring, punctuated with piercing blues. The Trance delivers further documentation of Ervin's endless tenor inventiveness…

Pierre Monteux had one of the longest active careers as a conductor, probably exceeded among famous musicians by Pablo Casals and Leopold Stokowski. He retained a youthful appearance with black hair (although his mustache was white), and was expressed by any suggestion that the color was not natural. He said anyone who said otherwise was welcome to come with shampoo, alcohol, or whatever to wash his hair and prove the color was natural. "Also you might mention that I have all my teeth," he added. This story also illustrates his sense of humor and genial nature. It is often stated that the man made no enemies, or even that he was loved by all.

Reprise Records #9 45350-2

On his 1993 Warner Bros. debut, instrumental rocker Gary Hoey plucks and hammers his way through 40 minutes' worth of post-Satriani rock noodling. Despite several attempts at genre-bending blues and soul references, Animal Instinct is all melodic (bordering on adult/soft) rock. The aggressive opener, "Mass Hysteria," and the upbeat shuffle "Texas Son" count as highlights, but the real standout is probably "Drive," a cut that boasts what is clearly the record's finest melody. Hoey plays admirably, and his supporting cast – Tony Franklin (bass) and Frankie Banali (drums) – also provide solid performances. Animal Instinct is a respectable offering for sure, but Hoey doesn't demonstrate a rhythmic or melodic capacity anywhere near that of his obvious influences, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Fans of virtuoso guitar rock would do better to search out superior shred material from the likes of Michael Lee Firkins, Tony MacAlpine, and Blues Saraceno before picking up this or any Gary Hoey disc.

Presenting the 2-CD expanded archival edition of composer James Newton Howard’s (DAVE, FLATLINERS, THE SIXTH SENSE, KING KONG ’05) Oscar-nominated score to the 1993 Warner Bros. blockbuster THE FUGITIVE, starring Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones and Julianne Moore and directed by Andrew Davis. James Newton Howard’s powerhouse orchestral score anchors all of the film’s action, drama and suspense, while never losing sight of the lead characters’ underlying humanity. It’s a modern-day classic action score that still retains its vitality. Produced by MV Gerhard and Dan Goldwasser and remastered by James Nelson from WB vault elements, this deluxe 2-Disc release features over an hour of previously unreleased music and finally corrects a major error on the original 1993 soundtrack release, (the right and left channels were mistakenly reversed). Bonus tracks include cuts from the original soundtrack release and alternate cues.

One of guitarist John Scofield's best sessions for Gramavision, this live date features his regular band of the period, a quartet with keyboardist Robert Aries, electric bassist Gary Grainger and drummer Dennis Chambers, who had been playing together regularly for a year at that point. The close communication between the musicians on such numbers as "Pick Hits," "Protocol" and "Blue Matter" could only come from the players fully understanding each other's musical personalities. The music, electric but adventurous, funky but definitely exploratory jazz, is difficult to describe, but easier for Scofield's fans to enjoy.

Organ music magical, symphonic, dancing, and jazzy from one of the world’s great wizards of the organ, Thomas Trotter, performed on the magnificent 2002 Klais organ in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall.
An unashamedly entertaining selection of old and new, with well-loved pieces from Saint-Saëns and Widor to Thomas Trotter’s own new transcription of Dukas’s ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’. Two sets of dances - one from the 16th-century Susato and the other from the 20th-century John Gardner are a riot of rhythmic energy and expressive colour.

Loss of hearing forced Smetana to leave his position at the Provincial Theatre and withdraw from social life and his musical career. In 1876 he moved to his daughter Zofie's house in Jabkenice. Here he was able to enjoy the calm and quite needed so that he could focus on his compositions. The change in his circumstances made him reflect on his life and he captured his feelings in his String Quartet No. 1 in E-minor, "From My Life". Smetana described the work as “intimate and private music for four instruments talking about my life”. However, the opposite was true of this epic score of programme music. Until this time the techniques used by Smetana in this quartet had only been used by composers writing for symphony orchestra. He used symphonic techniques with brilliant effect for chamber music.

In general, tenor saxophonist David Murray's Red Baron recordings are not on the same level of his Black Saints albums; the settings tended to be more conservative and the material not as strong. This outing with pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Santi Debriano, drummer Roy Haynes and trumpeter Marcus Belgrave is better than most of his Red Baron releases…

FLAC (tracks), Lossless | 1:07:30 | 268 Mb
Genre: Classical / Label: Praga Digitals

Playing host to an ad hoc group of musicians, the Prazák Quartet presents two of Arnold Schoenberg's classic works in a program that coheres most effectively. The pairing of the expressionist melodrama Pierrot lunaire and the angular, twelve-tone Suite requires the addition of a female vocalist, flute doubling on piccolo, two clarinets, a bass clarinet, and a piano to the Prazák's members, so this is a practical match-up for a concert, provided the players are available. Soprano Alda Caiello delivers the sprechstimme of Pierrot lunaire with a variety of expressions that sort with the bizarre moods and characters in the songs, and her delivery is theatrical, intense, and disturbing in its edginess. The instrumentalists are obviously at home in Schoenberg's music, so the complexities of Pierrot's tense accompaniment and the pungent counterpoint of the Suite come off with apparent ease. The recording space is quite spacious and reverberant, so this takes some of the harshness off Schoenberg's dissonances, and the roominess of the sound provides a great deal of separation, so the players can be differentiated with little difficulty. This may not be the best choice for listeners who like dry textures and crisp definition in these pieces, but that preference should take nothing away from the merits of this album.
